Three things to watch tonight as the Mavericks host the Hawks

Three things to watch tonight as the Mavericks host the Hawks

After a completely dominant win against the Orlando Magic on Monday, the Mavericks extended their home court winning streak to 10 games. This year, Dallas has one of the best home court advantages in the entire NBA and much of that is attributed to the fans at the AAC. Tonight, Atlanta comes to town to showcase their prized rookie they drafted in Trae Young. Get Rowdy, Loud, and Proud as the Mav’s look to make it 11 straight at home.

Doncic vs. Young II

This will be the second matchup for the two ROTY candidates who will be forever linked as a result of the draft night trade. Luka has taken the NBA by storm with his late game theatrics and step-back threes. While Young has had a few of his own highlights, most noticeably his 25 point, 17 assists outing vs. the Clippers. The Rookie of the Year race has yet to be won even if Luka is separating himself from the pack, look for Young to be there in the end.

Perhaps the biggest stat that separates these two is their teams records. Dallas’ 14-11 is very much in the mix for the Western Conference playoffs and the Hawks at 6-20 look destined for another lottery pick. Look for Doncic to put on a show as last time Young and the hawks got the last laugh stealing the game in Atlanta.

Steal of the draft

Speaking of stealing, Dallas might have another gem from this summer’s draft in Jalen Brunson. The Mavericks felt very fortunate that he slipped to them at the 33rd overall pick. Many feeling he was a steal then, he was very highly regarded coming out of college having won two national championship titles with Villanova .

Fast forward to today and due to a bad wrist for DSJ, Brunson will most likely fill in as the starting PG. His demeanor and composure on the court have spoken volumes in addition to his solid play, finishing with 17 points, four assists, and three rebounds Monday against Orlando. His high basketball IQ has fit in perfectly with the starting five, never seeming out-of-place or looking like a rookie. If he can continue to contribute at this rate Brunson will be hard to ignore for more minutes, maybe pushing DSJ to be better.

Dirk listed as questionable

For the first time this season Dirk Nowitzki is listed as questionable. Questionable, not doubtful, not out, not we will get an update in a few weeks; questionable! I’m not sure I’ve ever been more excited about a questionable status since my prom date.

Holger is in town and that does seem to align with him being ready to take the court soon. It’s an enticing thought to put Dirk with the second unit who are arguably the real reason Dallas has a winning record. It’s great the Mavericks have had success while he recovered but when he does come back it should bolster our depth and the hearts of all Dallas fans.
