Former Mavs guard Yogi Ferrell on why he chose to sign with Kings: “Their style of play. It’s faster.”

After initially agreeing to a two-year $5.3 million contract to return to the Dallas Mavericks for his third season, guard Yogi Ferrell backed out of his deal, according to Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports.

“We felt uncomfortable and will weigh our options,” said his agent Cervando Tejeda said on Friday.

Ferrell quick rejoined the free agency market by quickly signing to a two-year deal with the Sacramento Kings for about $900,000 more over the weekend.

“I like their youth,” Ferrell said on the Jim Rome Show. “Their style of play. It’s faster. They get up and down. I feel like that’s the same game I’ve played my entire life.”

When asked by Jim Rome what the decision process was like after he reportedly backed out of his verbal agreement with the Mavs, Ferrell said the Mavs understood his decision.

“There were no hard feelings on either side. Mark Cuban, he was the one that first gave me my opportunity in this league, I feel like. Coach [Rick] Carlisle is a great coach.”

Ferrell, 25, was one of the best stories to come out of the 2016-17 NBA season for the Dallas Mavericks. After going undrafted out of Indiana in the 2016 NBA Draft, Ferrell joined the Brooklyn Nets for the NBA Summer League. He then signed with the Nets, but was waived in late October after appearing in just three preseason games.

After signing a 10-day contract with the Mavs in January 2017, Ferrell played his way into a multi-year deal with the Mavs, winning Western Conference Rookie of the Month for February. He was later named to the 2017 NBA All-Rookie Second Team after averaging 11.3 points and 4.3 assists in 36 games.

During the 2017-18 campaign, Ferrell continued to play a key role as part of the Mavericks’ youth movement coming off the bench, appearing in all 82 games for the Mavs while averaging 10.2 points, 2.5 assists on 43 percent shooting including 37 percent from three.

Despite Ferrell’s departure, the Mavs backcourt should still be in good shape with newly drafted guards

Jalen Brunson and third overall pick Luka Doncic joining Dennis Smith Jr., Wesley Matthews, and J.J. Barea.
