A few takeaways as the Mavericks nab a big win over the Spurs

The Mavericks need this KP every night

This was Kristaps Porzingis best performance of the season. He flashed his scoring versatility, his improved rebounding, and most importantly, his rim protection.

He’s largely had a good offensive season. Could maybe shoot the three-point shot a bit better, but he setting career marks all over the box score.

What they need is for him to return to his former defensive form. A guy that was one of the best rim protectors in the game and a two-way beast.

This game was a step in the right direction. On both ends. And, ya know, a 28-14 line is pretty great too.

The Luka-KP synergy is building

There has been a lot of speculation in regarding whether or not these two get along. Much of it silly (I’m certainly guilty of it), but that’s where things were amongst team spectators.

Much of that comes from the way things have looked on the floor. That same “pop” and “Magic” that was apparent towards the end of last year has been missing.

Tonight, thankfully, it made a grand return.  There were several beautiful sequences that were punctuated by a Luka-KP connection. Flat out, the two of them slammed the door shut on the Spurs. And they weren’t getting a lot help from “the others.”

They had to be a star-duo tonight and they delivered. That’s a great step for them.

The Mavericks need more talent

I mean, this is always true, no? Point is, this roster outside of maybe it’s top three or four just doesn’t really stack up to other West contenders.

That’s not meant to shame the other pieces on the roster. Many of those guys are valued role players in every rotation, but for a team has a top-10 player under the age of 23, they’re probably a bit too high in the pecking order.

Outside of maybe a deadline deal, there isn’t much that can be done to address this in the short term. But it’s very clear watching this team that they’re missing a few dynamic Players to compliment their star.

Hopefully it’s something they address this offseason.
