Brandon Ashley’s 21 points helps power Legends past Warriors

JJ Avila had his first career triple-double to lead the Texas Legends (26-20) to victory over the Santa Cruz Warriors (22-23) 111-95.

The two teams got off to a slow start, shooting below 30% and combining for 0-for-17 from outside.  After exchanging leads four times, Texas took the 18-14 lead and never looked back.  Cory Jefferson pounded out 12 second-quarter points and the Legends outrebounded the Warriors 16-9 to head into halftime up 12.

Texas rolled through the third behind a perfect performance from Jordan Downing, who finished 4-for-4 (2-for-2 outside) for 10 points. Avila came alive in the fourth, grabbing 8 points, 7 rebounds, and dishing out 2 assists as the Legends took their largest lead of the night (+20) midway through to stay out of reach of the visitors’ comeback efforts.

Avila finished at 16 points, 13 rebounds, 10 assists, and 2 blocks while Brandon Ashley added 21 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. Cory Jefferson added 19 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists, and Keith Hornsby tallied 15 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists.  Downing and Damon Lynn finished with 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists each to wrap up the double-digit scorers.  Texas neared season-highs in both rebounds (59) and assists (31) and held the Warriors to the third lowest opponent score of the season.

Golden State two-way player Chris Boucher led the Warriors with 22 points, 16 rebounds, and 4 blocks, and Jeremy Pargo added 20 points, 11 assists, and 2 blocks.

Texas continues their fight to the playoffs on Sunday at 5pm hosting the Agua Caliente Clippers.
