Dallas Cowboys 8/20 practice report + Aldon Smith praise

The Dallas Cowboys returned to the field on Thursday morning after having the day off Wednesday.

Here are some of the notes

Tyron Smith (hamstring) and Jourdan Lewis (ankle) both left practice early. Lewis’ injury isn’t expected to be serious, although results have not returned yet. Smith is “fine.”

La’el Collins was involved in a car crash on Thursday morning. Collins came out of the crash with no injuries.

Everson Griffen and Dontari Poe were both in full pads but did not participate in team or individual drills. Griffen told the media that he grew up a Cowboys fan and was named after Everson Walls, who was his dads favorite player. Side note: Griffen will officially wear 97 for the Cowboys after getting the number from Trysten Hill.

One storyline that is developing at The Star is the emphasis of getting the ball on defense. Leighton Vander Esch was on 1053 the fan and said that they are practicing turnovers more now than in previous years.

On field notes

Cedrick Wilson had a productive day. He caught a 20 yard touchdown from Dak Prescott on 4th and 5 and then hauled in the two point conversion in the back corner of the end zone.

Ventell Bryant had what many are considering the best play of camp thus far. During 7v7, Bryant caught a contested deep throw over Daryl Worley. Bryant is entering his second season. His only catch in 2019 was a 15 yard touchdown against the Buffalo Bills on Thanksgiving.

Without Collins and Tyron the Cowboys defensive line is having their way with the Cowboys offensive line. Per David Helman from DallasCowboys.com, Aldon Smith and DeMarcus Lawrence met in the backfield so quickly Smith tumbled over Lawrence.

Aldon Smith spoke to the media for the first time on Thursday.

Aldon was asked about his relationship with D-Law and he said that they  “just click” with a chuckle.

Aldon on what he missed the most during his time away from football.

“Definitely the camaraderie, the guys, the laughs and the little jokes.”

Aldon on his playing style and differences from when he last played in the NFL.

“I’ve always liked to use speed and power, and I’ve added some weight that’s muscle. So it makes the power more powerful.”

Dak said it doesn’t look like Smith has been away for five years. “He’s a monster,” Dak said.

Coach Mike McCarthy told reporters that he’s very pleased with where Aldon is right now. His power and his length are two specific things McCarthy pointed out.
