Dustin Johnson wins again at the Tour Championship

I feel like I’m having deja-vu.  Wasn’t I just writing about a Dustin Johnson victory?

Well, it feels that way because that’s exactly what the theme of the FedEx Cup Playoffs have been.  DJ won the Northern Trust, lost in a playoff in the BMW Championship and ultimately finished first in this week’s Tour Championship at East Lake.  He is the FedEx Cup champion which carries a winning purse of a (decent) $15 MILLION.  It’s been a good month for Dustin Johnson.

Johnson (-21) won by three strokes over Xander Schauffele and Justin Thomas, putting a real cherry on top of one of the most dominant stretches of golf ever played.  Since the PGA Championship, Dustin has lost to only two other guys – Colin Morikawa and Jon Rahm.  I’d say that’s pretty decent, wouldn’t you?

However, despite strolling to the tee on Monday with a confident lead after shooting 64 in the third round, it wasn’t all smooth sailing.  The guys playing behind him are world class golfers in their own right and would apply some early pressure.  The closest being Johnson’s playing partner, Xander Schauffele, who came out of the gates hot.

The pressure would continue until the 13th hole where Dustin would make his biggest putt of the day.  After a pair of flubbed wedges from just off the green for both golfers, long putts were left for par.  Xander would come up just short.  Dustin buried his.  The Xander flames were extinguished and Johnson would return to smooth seas yet again.

When I say he buried it, I mean it.  The thing was center cut at a pace that could end up 6-feet past.

Not to be outdone, Xander and JT would try their best to apply some late pressure to the eventual winner but it would be too little too late.  When you play against this version of Dustin Johnson, you can’t afford a single mistake.  Either way, they played some awesome golf.

Okay, respects paid.  Back to DJ.

His game has been on an absolutely different level since shooting 80-80 at the Memorial.  I mean, look at how good he’s been:

When you highest score in months is a 71 I think you’re going to win a bunch of golf tournaments.  With the US Open right around the corner, Dustin Johnson’s game is in the right place and he’ll be hard to bet against.

Here’s one last Dustin drive to send you on your way.

Next up: Winged Foot.

There are two things I love more than anything - golf and hockey. Well, also the NFL... and the NBA...who am I kidding. I just love sports.
