Four bold predictions for the Dallas Cowboys

Four bold predictions for the Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys have 14 days until they kick off their 2020 season against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night football September 13th. It has been announced in the past week that the game will played with no fans.  There is a lot to be excited about as this season approaches. None of which is bigger than the new energy around the team with head coach Mike McCarthy leading the way. The NFC east appears to be a two team race again between the Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles.

Latest camp notes

The Cowboys will hold “Cowboys night,” which has been called the “Blue/White scrimmage” in previous years on Sunday night at AT&T Stadium. The Cowboys will hold off on having fans in the stadium until they take on the Atlanta Falcons in week 2.

La’el Collins participated in team drills for the first time on Friday after missing all of training camp due to some “wear and tear.” Tyron Smith also took part in team drills after missing a few days.

Ceedee Lamb had a rare rookie “vet day” off on Friday. Cedrick Wilson appears to have locked down the 4th receiver spot on the Cowboys after having an exceptional training camp.

Trevon Diggs has been impressive making plays every practice for the last two weeks.

As training camp winds down and we get close to the regular season, I always love getting into bold predictions so here they are for the 2020 season.

Dak Prescott will lead the league in passing yards with over 5,000 yards

No contract, no problem for Dak Prescott as he heads into the 2020 season on the franchise tag. Prescott threw for 4,902 yards and 3o touchdowns in 2019. That still wasn’t good enough to earn a long term contract, but that was enough for the Cowboys to go out and add one of the best receivers from the 2020 draft class in Ceedee Lamb. I am predicting that in 2020, Prescott will lead the league in passing yards with over 5,000.

Everson Griffen, Demarcus Lawrence and Aldon Smith will combine for 30 sacks

Coverage vs. Rush is the primary argument in todays NFL. Is the coverage more important or is the rush? The Cowboys appear to believe that the rush is more important. They went out and added Dontari Poe, Gerald McCoy(who was released after rupturing his quad earlier in camp), Aldon Smith and then acquired Everson Griffen after camp started.

The Cowboys ranked 17th in sacks as a team in 2019 with 39. I am expecting much more from the defensive line in 2020 led by Demarcus Lawrence, Aldon Smith and Everson Griffen. I believe that the three of them combined with accumulate 30 sacks in 2020. Robert Quinn led the team in sacks in 2019 with 11.5.

2020 breakdown:

Lawrence 10 sacks.

Griffen 12 sacks.

Smith 8 sacks.

Ceedee Lamb will lead the team in receiving yards

The NFL draft was in April and I am still sitting here in August in shock that Lamb fell to the Cowboys at 17 in the draft. You just don’t see a talent like that drop very often. It has been amazing to me that from all the training camp reports, you hardly hear about Cooper or Gallup because Lamb has been so impressive. There has been an expectation set that all three receivers will surpass 1,000 yards receiving in 2020. Dak and Ceedee appear to have hit the ground running similar to when Cooper came to Dallas in 2018 and I believe that Ceedee will be the teams leading receiver as a rookie.

Earl Thomas leads the Cowboys in interceptions

Earl Thomas was connected to the Cowboys the very moment the Baltimore Ravens released him. Since those early moments, there has been several reports saying that the Cowboys aren’t interested despite the Jones family refusing to shut the door. Thomas still hasn’t signed with a team and I believe that is because the Cowboys will sign him in the next couple of weeks. The main reason I feel the Cowboys will sign him is because there has been an obvious change in the teams philosophy in acquiring veteran free agents. The Cowboys still have not properly addressed the safety position despite signing Haha Clinton-Dix to a free agent deal. Clinton-Dix is struggling to beat out Darian Thompson in camp and if there was a regular season game tomorrow, I believe that Thompson would start over Haha.

Now, that all that is out of the way, I believe that Thomas will be a Cowboy in the next couple of weeks and will stay out of trouble being in a place he has wanted to be for years now and will go on to the lead the team in interceptions.
