Four story lines heading into Dallas Cowboys training camp

The Dallas Cowboys are roughly two months away from reporting to training camp. They are currently in their second week of OTAs at The Star in Frisco. After this week, they will have one more week of OTAs before mandatory minicamp June 12th-14th. Here are four storylines heading into training camp.

Zack Martin Contract extension

During the 2017 offseason, there was a lot of buzz around the Cowboys getting a deal done with Guard Zack Martin. A year later, the same conversation is being had. Martin is arguably the best offensive guard in the NFL. He is entering the last year of his rookie deal and has sat out of the teams voluntary workouts to this point. His deal will pay him $9.3 million in 2018.

DeMarcus Lawrence – Real or Fluke?

DeMarcus Lawrence has taken a bit of a different approach to receiving the franchise tag. A lot of players around the league will threaten to hold out until they receive a long term deal. Lawrence is happy with his franchise tag. He remains extremely motivated entering the 2018 season to prove 2017 was not a fluke.

New Secondary Coach

There hasn’t been a bad word said about new defensive backs coach Kris Richard. Defensive Coordinator Rod Marinelli has said the addition of Richard is on par with any other move the Cowboys have made this offseason. Reports from The Star are that his energy and his passion make it fun to come to work every day. One thing the players love about him is that he’s the only coach that wears cleats at the practices.

The Offense

There are a lot of new pieces on the offensive side of the ball. It will be important for quarterback Dak Prescott and his new receivers and tight ends to get on the same page. New receiver Allen Hurns thinks the relationship with his new quarterback is going just fine. “I think I’m getting a good feel for his game and he’s getting the chance to do the same with me. I think we’re building some great chemistry,” he said after his first week of OTAs in Dallas. Hurns also commented on how excited he was to know he is going to get a lot of one on ones because of Ezekiel Elliott.
