Heartbroken Mavericks pay tribute to the great Kobe Bryant

Sunday became one of the most memorable sports days in recent memory for all of the wrong reasons. Around 1 PM Central time, the tragic news began to break that NBA legend Kobe Bryant had passed away after a helicopter crash in suburban Los Angeles.

Unfortunately, the tragic news did not end there. After back and forth reporting by various news outlets, it was confirmed later that Bryant’s 13-year-old daughter Gianna “Gigi” Bryant was one of the other four deaths in the crash.

Bryant is one of the most iconic players in professional sports history with a competitive edge over the course of a historic 20 year career that could likely be matched by very few. He is incredibly influential on today’s crop of NBA players and that was very apparent in the fallout from this news. We have gathered various reactions from the world of basketball to Kobe and Gianna’s tragic passing.

The NBA was put in a tough situation with the news of Bryant’s passing coming so close to the tip-off of a couple Sunday afternoon games. Ultimately, the Rockets/Nuggets and Spurs/Raptors games did proceed at their regularly scheduled times with various tributes in place. Former Maverick Tyson Chandler was understandably emotional as he sat on the bench during the Nuggets/Rockets game.

On one of the most heartbreaking days in sports history, we are all sending our love, thoughts and prayers to Vanessa Bryant and her daughters as they recover from this tragedy.
