Mock Draft Roundup 2.0: Alabama’s Surtain continues to be overwhelming favorite at 10

Mock Draft Roundup 2.0: Alabama’s Surtain continues to be overwhelming favorite at 10

Tom Fornelli, CBS.com – Patrick Surtain II, CB

School: Alabama | Year: Junior

“Surtain is the first corner off the board, but I assure you he will not be the last in this mock. He’s a day one starter for the Cowboys, and he has the potential to be a shutdown corner and one of the in the league for a long time.”

Chris Trapasso, CBS.com – Jaycee Horn, CB

School: South Carolina | Year: Junior

“I could totally see the Cowboys being enamored with Horn’s workout and NFL bloodlines here. They need corner help badly.”

Daniel Jeremiah, NFL.com – Kwity Pate, EDGE

School: Michigan | Year: Senior

“Paye is the most explosive pass rusher in the draft. He would team up with DeMarcus Lawrenceto give the Cowboys a big-time duo off the edges.”

Walter Football – Patrick Surtain II, CB

School: Alabama | Year: Junior

“The Cowboys will be tempted to upgrade their offensive line, but I suspect that they’ll target a potential shutdown cornerback instead to fix their woeful pass defense.”

Luke Easterling, DraftWire – Patrick Surtain II, CB

School: Alabama | Year: Junior

Ben Linsey, PFF – Caleb Farley, CB (15th pick)

School: Virginia Tech | Year: Junior

Cowboys trade down option with New England.

“Farley’s draft stock recently took a tumble with the elite athletic testing of Surtain, Horn and Greg Newsome coupled with news of another back surgery for Farley. I would still feel confident taking him here after the trade down for Dallas, especially considering his fit in Dan Quinn’s defense with ideal length and speed for the position.”

Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz, USA Today – Patrick Surtain II, CB

School: Alabama | Year: Junior

“He has been linked to Dallas for months now, and it’s easy to see why. Already known for his consistency and mental acuity for the position, the son of three-time Pro Bowler Patrick Surtain also highlighted his athleticism at his pro day. That refinement assuredly would come in handy for a secondary that has been too leaky for too long.”

Joe Hopkins, FOX – Patrick Surtain II, CB

School: Alabama | Year: Junior

“Defense was an issue last year for the Cowboys, who gave up the fifth most points in the league (29.6 PPG). Surtain II fills a need and teams up with Trevon Diggs to give Dallas an exciting, young duo in the secondary.”

Connor Green, The Landry Hat – Jaycee Horn, CB (15th Overall)

School: South Carolina | Year: Junior

Cowboys get the 15th overall pick and 46th overall pick.

“The six-foot-one, 205-pound defensive back, perhaps unsurprisingly, excels at press-man coverage and plays with a toughness that the Cowboy’s new defensive coordinator Dan Quinn often looks for in his players. The biggest knock on Horn is that he is sometimes overly physical to the point where he gets flagged by the refs.”

Jim Nevarez, Cowboys Wire – Patrick Surtain II, CB

School: Alabama | Year: Junior

“At this point in the pre-draft process Patrick Surtain II is the player most easily associated with the Cowboys. The overload of information during this draft season has seemed to sour some fans on Surtain, however Dallas would be overjoyed to pair the Alabama product with his former college teammate Trevon Diggs. While Surtain is not the consensus top defensive player on all draft boards, The Athletics’ Dane Brugler, has him ranked as his top defender and the 10th best player overall in the 2021 draft. If the Cowboys wind up drafting the 6-foot-2 corner it would be a result of having one of their highest-rated players at arguably their biggest positional need.”
