Mock Draft Roundup 3.0: Analysts agree Surtain should be the top choice for Dallas

Jonathan Jones, CBS.com – Patrick Surtain II, CB

School: Alabama | Year: Junior

“This fit seems so obvious I almost don’t want to make it. Surtain is the best corner in an athletically gifted class, and he has the pedigree to excel with the star on his helmet in Dan Quinn’s defense.

Maurice Jones-Drew, NFL.com – Patrick Surtain II, CB

School: Alabama | Year: Junior

“This is an easy pick for the Cowboys, as they nab the draft’s top cornerback to pair with Trevon Diggs. This CB duo could very well be the best in the league in a Cover 3 scheme.”

Walter Football – Patrick Surtain II, CB

School: Alabama | Year: Junior

“The Cowboys will be tempted to upgrade their offensive line, but I suspect that they’ll target a pitential shutdown cornerback instead to fix their woeful pass defense. Son of former Dolphins star cornerback Patrick Surtain Sr., Surtain II ws tested early by teams, yet was able to puinish opponents for doing so. The 6-foot-2 cornerback projects as a top-15 pick in the future.

John Clayton, Washington Post – Patrick Surtain II, CB

School: Alabama | Year: Junior

“It’s hard to believe, but this would mark the first defensive player selected. Surtain is one of the top defenders in the draft and fills a need for the Cowboys at corner.”

Connor Orr, SI.com – Jaycee Horn, CB

School: South Carolina | Year: Junior

“Ideally, for the Cowboys, Justin Fields won’t slide, which could instead push Patrick Surtan II into their laps. With Surtain off the board though, Horn is not a bad second option for a team that is desperate for help at the cornerback position. The Gamecocks asked Horn to split man and zone responsibilities about half the time, meaning he should be comfortable in the Seahawksian defense Dan Quinn hopes to bring to Dallas.”

Matt Williamson, Pro Football Network – Patrick Surtain II, CB

School: Alabama | Year: Junior

“Dallas runs to the podium to select the highest-rate cornerback in this draft class.”

Peter Schrager, NFL.com – Patrick Surtain II, CB

School: Alabama | Year: Junior

“The first defensive player off the board, and it’s a cornerback to a team in desperate need of help there. Surtain would join his former Crimson Tide teammate, Trevon Diggs, in Dan Quinn’s defensive backfield.”

Connor Green, The Landry Hat –
Micah Parsons, LB

School: Penn State | Year: Junior

“The Dallas Cowboys nab arguably the best defensive player in this draft class with their top pick. Given Leighton Vander Esch’s injury struggles and his looming fifth-year option next season this move ensures excellence at the linebacker position moving forward. Regardless of what the team decides to do with Vander Esch, this move adds a legitimate playmaker with a rare combination of speed and size to America’s Team.”

Matthew Postins, SI.com – Patrick Surtain II, CB

School: Alabama | Year: Junior

“The Cowboys seem to be content either sitting at No. 10 for a defensive name or trade up for Florida’s Kyle Pitts. A trade back? That doesn’t sound like Jerry Jones.”

Gino Tomaselli – Cowboys Coffee Talk – Patrick Surtain II, CB

School: Alabama | Year: Junior

“My top choices here were CB Patrick Surtain II, WR Devonta Smith, LB Micah Parsons and CB Jaycee Horn. I flirted with the idea of adding another offensive weapon here but I opted to select a cornerback in spite of the supposed depth at the position in this draft. Despite my personal preference for Jaycee Horn, I could not pass up drafting Patrick Surtain II in this scenario.”
