Mock Draft Roundup 6.0: LSU’s Chaisson clear pick for Dallas Thursday?

Mel Kiper Jr., ESPN.com – Xavier McKinney, S

School: Alabama | Year: Junior

McKinney called me out last week because I didn’t rank him as my No. 1 safety. I have Antoine Winfield Jr. just a little bit higher because of his versatility to play slot corner. But McKinney is the best pure safety in this class, and he’d be a great fit in Dallas, which has some talent on defense but lost starters Byron Jones, Robert Quinn, Maliek Collins and Jeff Heath. The Cowboys brought inHa Ha Clinton-Dix for short-term help, but McKinney could be the future.”

R.J. White, CBS Sports – A.J. Terrell, CB

School: Clemson | Year: Junior

“The buzz around Terrell has grown in the late stages of the predraft process, to the point I believe he’ll be the third corner off the board. And the Cowboys definitely have a need at the position after the loss of Byron Jones, so if they can’t trade down and amass picks, I believe this could be the landing spot for the Clemson product.”

Mike Freeman, Bleacher Report – C.J. Henderson, CB

School: Florida | Year: Junior

“The Cowboys get a steal and fill a big need. Also, teams say they don’t believe rumors Dallas is interested in a quarterback here.”

Ryan Wilson, CBS Sports – K’Lavon Chaisson, EDGE

School: LSU | Year: Sophomore (RS)

“Chaisson is a raw, explosive pass rusher who is only going to get better the more he plays. The Cowboys have needs at cornerback and even at center, with Travis Frederick’s retirement, but Chaisson is the second-best edge-player in this class.”

Nate Davis, USA Today – K’Lavon Chaisson, EDGE

“DeMarcus Lawrence is this defense’s leading returning sack man … and he had a meager five in 2019. Chaisson may not be ready to contribute on every down, but he might have an instant impact as a pass rush specialist.”

Vinnue Iyer, Sporting News – K’Lavon Chaisson, EDGE

“The Cowboys’ linebacking future is bright with Jaylon Smith and Leighton Vander Esch, but they can target someone as the new complementary pass rusher for DeMarcus Lawrence in the wake of losing Robert Quinn in free agency. Chaisson (6-3, 254 pounds) has a great name for an elite, active defender who chases after QBs and RBs alike. He had 6.5 sacks and 60 tackles during LSU’s championship run, and like several teammates, his draft stock shot up throughout the season.”

Brad Biggs, Chicago Tribune – K’Lavon Chaisson, EDGE

“The Cowboys might be pigeonholed into finding a cornerback to replace Byron Jones here. If not, replacing Robert Quinn on the defensive front is another pressing need and can help them get younger upfront. It’s not a great class for edge rushers after Chase Young and Chaisson, so teams in the hunt will need to act early.”

Dalton Johnson & Josh Schrock, NBC Sports – Justin Jefferson, WR

School: LSU | Year: Junior

“The Cowboys need to address their secondary, but it’s just too easy to see Jerry Jones falling in love with Jefferson or even TCU’s Jalen Reagor. A trio of Jefferson, Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup is nasty.” — DJ

Charles Davis, NFL.com – K’Lavon Chaisson, EDGE

“Star pass rusher Tank Lawrence approves of this selection.”

Rhett Lewis, NFL.com– C.J. Henderson, CB

School: LSU | Year: Sophomore (RS)

With Chaisson off the board, the Cowboys choose to pass on the third-best edge rusher in favor of the second-best CB. Henderson helps ease the loss of Byron Jones in free agency.”

Brian Martin, Inside The Star.com – Zack Baun, EDGE

School: Wisconsin | Year: Senior

Baun is a Swiss Army Knife type of chess piece the Cowboys can deploy in a variety of ways. He’s also a good insurance policy if Aldon Smith/Randy Gregory struggle if/when they’re reinstated and if there are any lingering issues with Leighton Vander Esch’s surgically repaired neck.”

K.D. Drummond, USA Today – Jeff Gladney (1-23), CB

School: TCU | Year: Senior

Overall, Gladney is a scrappy, quick-footed athlete with an ultra-competitive play personality and if he can improve his route anticipation and be more subtle with his physicality, he will be a decade-long NFL starter.”

Matthew Lenix, USA Today – K’Lavon Chaisson, EDGE

Josh Edwards, CBS Sports – Xavier McKinney (1-23), S

School: Alabama | Year: Junior

Dallas is able to slide down, recoup some picks and still nab the top safety prospect in this draft class. McKinney has the versatility to play some nickel as well.”

Jeff Cavanaugh, 105.3 The Fan – K’Lavon Chaisson, EDGE

Peter King, Pro Football Talk – Xavier McKinney, S

Todd McShay, ESPN – C.J. Henderson, CB

Michael Renner, Pro Football Focus – K’Lavon Chaisson, EDGE

Chad Reuter, NFL.com – Javon Kinlaw, DT

School: South Carolina | Year: Senior

There are always one or two teams that use a first-round pick on a player they simply like a lot — even if he doesn’t address a glaring need. Tyrone Crawford’s future with the Cowboys is up in the air a bit due to his price tag (Dallas could save $8 million against the cap by releasing him) and recent injury (had season-ending hip surgery in October), so could the Cowboys shift Gerald McCoyoutside to play next to Kinlaw and Dontari Poe? I wouldn’t be surprised.”

Kevin Hanson, Sports Illustrated – C.J. Henderson, CB
