Mavs defeat Bulls 91-75 in Dennis Smith Jr.’s debut

The Dallas Mavericks defeated the Chicago Bulls 91-75 in their first game of the 2017 Summer League in Las Vegas.

It was the debut for the ninth overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft Dennis Smith Jr., who finished the game with 14 points albeit on 5-of-12 shooting from floor including 1-of-6 from behind the three-point line. Despite his struggles shooting, Smith Jr. looked confident and in control during his Mavs debut, adding 7 rebounds and 6 assists.

“I came out with some nerves, but I eventually found my way into the game,” Smith Jr. told NBA TV. “Not forcing anything, getting my teammates involved, and we got the win.”

 Notes:

  • Mavs big man Brandon Ashley led all scorers with 21 points to go along with 9 rebounds and a plus-23 efficiency rating. Ashley signed with the Mavs in 2015 before getting waived after 7 preseason games. He spent the 2015 season with the Texas Legends and 2016 in the German league.
  • Undrafted Baylor alum Johnathan Motley finished with 5 points. He left the game with a sprained ankle, but later return to the bench.
  • Chicago Bulls forward Lauri Markkanen, the No. 7 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, finished with 14 points and 8 rebounds.
  • 2017 Chinese Basketball Association MVP Ding Yanyuhan finished with 5 points and 3 rebounds. 
  • Yogi Ferrell started the game alongside Smith Jr. and ousted the rookie finishing with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting including 3-of-3 from behind the three-point arc. 
  • Mark Cuban attended the game and sat alongside J. Cole, Rick Carlisle, and Seth Curry.
