Dirk Nowitzki: “I Will Finish My Career In Dallas”

Boy, did things look bleak in regards to the future of Dirk Nowitzki in Dallas. The Mavericks struck out on Hassan Whiteside, Mike Conley, Nicolas Batum and others, leaving them a depleted roster – one that would see Chandler Parsons sign with his new team, the Memphis Grizzlies. Fans across Mavs Nation took to social media and campaigned to have Nowitzki go elsewhere and have a chance to win that second championship – something that he rightfully deserves.

Then Mark Cuban, Donnie Nelson, and the Mavericks front office struck. They resigned Deron Williams, signed Dwight Powell to an offer sheet, signed Harrison Barnes, traded for Andrew Bogut, and signed Seth Curry, younger sibling of two time MVP, Steph Curry.

Yesterday, Nowitzki made it clear that he wanted to stay in Dallas, officially signing a 2-year, $40 million deal to stay with the franchise he has played his entire career with.

“I’ve always said that I wanted to finish my career in Dallas. I have now played 18 seasons and it would be great if I could make 20 seasons full. Whether my contract then one, two or three years is , the details are not yet fully negotiated, but we will be there definitely find a way, which is respectable for both sides I will finish definitely my career in Dallas.”

Yesterday, Nowitzki took part in an interview for Spox, a German Publication. We’ve done our best to translate the interview (done in German) to English.

Dallas Mavericks Free Agency:

“On Monday, we had a good day. The first two were not so great. Harrison Barnes has promised, we have Andrew Bogut, and Seth Curry committed. Now we wait until the team has been filled. I have of course already promised and I am looking forward to my last years at a high level. But now it is fort of all about getting people to pick up. I believe there have been good strong moves.”

On Harrison Barnes Acquisition:

“We expect more from Barnes as he had shown in Golden State clear he has made only 11 points in the section with the Warriors, but next to Curry and Thompson that’s normal, we hope it a go to guy for.. we will.”

On the Trade For Andrew Bogut:

“A ‘thickness’ you can now always use, the dirty blocks sets and sometimes makes a few casts in recent years on center although we had good players, but still a few problems, since fits of Bogut . he is very good purely a good passer and I think it will be fun for us.”

On the Increase in Player Salaries:

Salaries are of course all utopian The TV revenue have increased enormously, but as I see it:.. Before we shove all the owners, the players should take a bite of the cake for most people this is all a bit much – that because someone throws a bit of the ball in the basket, but nevertheless I see the money somewhere among the players than the owners, who are almost all billionaires anyway..”

The Hierarchy in the Mavericks Organization:

“If me the hierarchy in terms of the salaries would have been important, I would of course have given up so much money in recent years, the last year were and highest-paid player Wesley Matthews and Chandler Parsons, but the best players were actually Deron Williams and myself.
