Three questions from Cowboys OTAs

The first week of Dallas Cowboys OTAs has come and gone. The Cowboys will have two more OTA sessions May 28th-30th and June 3rd-6th before their mandatory minicamp June 11th-13th. There will be very limited contact during these sessions but they will go a long way to incorporating the new guys and will give all the players a chance to be around the coaching staff.

After the first session of OTAs, I came away with three questions…

Which rookie will have the biggest impact during the 2019 season?

Tony Pollard will have the biggest impact in 2019. In years past, a weapon like this may not be able to carve out a role in this offense because the coaching staff would not have the creativity to incorporate Pollard into the offense. However, with Kellen Moore taking over the play calling duties, Pollard should be able to make a big impact in multiple ways. In college, Pollard did a little bit of everything. He was a running back, wide receiver and contributed in a big way on special teams. While Moore isn’t expected to overhaul the playbook, he is expected to present different looks out of formations they have used in years past, which will eliminate the predictably this offense has had. Several Cowboys, including Pollard have raved about Moore’s ability to create mismatches.

Which second year player will take the biggest leap in 2019?

Connor Williams is the second year player I expect to take a huge leap. The biggest knock on Williams his rookie season was that he was not strong enough. Williams went out of his way to change that and a big part of that was working out with Zack Martin a ton. I also believe that the addition of Connor McGovern will push him to take that leap so that he doesn’t lose his starting position.

Which veteran addition will have the biggest impact in 2019?

Randall Cobb will have the biggest impact by any veteran addition. There is no question about the player Cobb is. However, there is a question with his ability to stay healthy. Cobb has missed 11 games the past three seasons and because of that he comes to Dallas with a huge chip on his shoulder. The Cowboys are already benefiting from that in the limited time he has been on the team with his football IQ and quickness. Cowboys struggled in the red zone in 2018 and with Cobb now in the mix, he will help in a huge way along with the return of Jason Witten.
