DSF Top 20 Current Athletes: #2 RB Ezekiel Elliott

Ezekiel Elliott
Age: 24
Position: Running Back
Career Highlights: 2x Pro Bowler (2016, 2018), First-team all pro (2016), Second-team all pro(2018), 2x NFL rushing yards leader (2016,2018), PFWA All-Rookie Team (2016)

The Dallas Cowboys drafted Elliott #4 overall in the 2016 draft. Going into the draft it was reported that the Cowboys were deciding between him or corner-back Jalen Ramsey. The Cowboys ultimately decided to draft Zeke because they felt he could be the final piece for a championship-level Tony Romo offense.

It didn’t quite work out that way after Tony Romo went down in the 2016 preseason. Dak Prescott was forced to step in and that put two rookies in the Cowboys backfield. The Cowboys would lose in Week 1 of the 2016 season to the New York Giants but went on to win 10 straight and finished the season 13-3.

Elliott rushed for 1,631 yards in 2016 and led the league by over 300 rushing yards. Elliott added 15 touchdowns and averaged over five yards a carry. In this first career postseason game, he rushed for 125 yards on 22 carries against the Green Bay Packers.

After being suspended for six games in 2017 and finishing the season with 983 rushing yards, Elliott returned to the top of the rushing leaders list in 2018 with 1,431 rushing yards on 304 carries in 15 games. Since 2016, no running back has rushed for more yards, has more runs of 10+ yards or first downs than Elliott.

Elliott signed a six-year extension worth $90 million, with $50 million guaranteed the Wednesday before Week 1 of the 2019 season. Elliott has 289 rushing yards on 55 carries through three games in 2019. That is the best three game start to a season Elliott has had in his four seasons.
